Tribute to Fallen NCPH Shinobis

Naruto Cosplayers Philippines (NCPH) was established on October 10, 2010 (10-10-10) and throughout the years some of our comrades had fallen.  They have said their final farewell and move on to the afterlife.  This simple post is a simple tribute to some of the NCPH Fallen Shinobis.

YENCE MONTES

Our first ever cosplayer of Naruto.  He is 15 years old when he joined NCPH and in fact was one of the first members of the group which we formerly called as Chikara No Ai.  He was even part of our only group cosplay competition entry during UP AME Track 10.  Yence, was found dead March 6, 2018 along Pasig River, he was 22 years old.

JOHN BOLO

One of the pioneers and also a Hokage for NCPH Bulacan Chapter, John Bolo will always be remembered for his jokes and jolly personality.  This tall and thin young man use to cosplay Hidan and he was good at it.  He was instrumental in NCPH’s event in SM City Marilao and also in maintaining the friendship of the Bulacan Chapter.  John Bolo suffered one of the cruelest of deaths, being found murdered brutally due to love.

MARISOL SAN DIEGO

Marisol was another jolly fellow of NCPH.  She is always present in most of our events along with her son Allen.  He commonly cosplays Sailormoon and also Bulma.  Whenever she cosplays Bulma for sure Master Pogi (Mr. Satan) will be there.  She succumbs to illness and decided to rest all of a sudden.  It was a shocking news for all of us back then.

ZAK MENDOZA

He was a neophyte member of NCPH Bulacan Chapter in 2012.  He had great plans for the group including creating more outreach and charity for Bulacan and NCPH as a whole.  We were all shocked to hear the news one day that he succumbed to illness, again he was one of the youngest members of the group.  Sadly, we do not have a photo of him that we can share.

Our sincerest farewell and salute to all of you OUR FELLOW NCPH COMRADE AND MEMBER OF THE FAMILY!

Happy 6th Anniversary Naruto Cosplayers PH

It was October 10, 2010 when the idea of forming a group based on Naruto was first conceptualized.  It was Longskie, Rio, Nathan, John Dwight and David which formally envisioned a group of cosplayers focused around Naruto characters.  We never knew as well that the founding of NCPH will coincide with the birthday of Uzumaki Naruto.  The first mission was just to form a group of cosplayers who will be completing the Akatsuki but then later on it evolved as more cosplayers joins.  In the span of one year, Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) becomes a formal organization with officers and with more than 500 members. Is there a double standard in Cosplay?

Naruto_Cosplayers_Cosplay_Double_Standards

With cosplay becoming mainstream we would like to ask you if there exist a double standard in Cosplay?  What if a woman dress as a sexy or revealing character how would you react?  What if it is a male dressed as a sexy male or a genderbend female character?  Would there be any difference?

Take a look at this video from Naruto Cosplayers US and see what they have to say.

What about you, what do you think?

Cosplay Against Bullying needs YOU now!

Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) is in full support of the efforts of our counterpart Naruto Cosplayers USA (NCUS) to raise funds to support the Cosplay Against Bullying Campaign.  We all all part of a group of sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts dedicating our time to spreading a message of friendship and ending hate both on and offline.

CAB-profile1More than a year ago, Myk Castillo from the Philippines started a Facebook Page to promote “Cosplay Against Bullying.”  The page grew and cosplayers began to join in the campaign by sending their photos and creating images and quotes to support and spread the campaign.  In 2014, we began spreading the campaign as part of our official CausePlay activities.

In that same year, Naruto Cosplayers US was formally formed and since bullying is a major issue in the US, the campaign moved its way to the United States through a small group of people with a dream to mitigate the effects of bullying in schools, workplaces, and anywhere else it can occur.

Given that the problem can happen to anyone, and that it is a problem so wide spread, the dream to inspire others to fight against it seemed impossible and doomed to fail. In the last 8 months of the activity in the states, however,  followers on all CAB’s social media outlets have more than doubled in a short amount of time.

However, this campaign needs your support more than ever.  We encourage you to support the fund raising initiative below and share whatever you can to add more fuel to this campaign and spread it as well.

These funds that will be donated will go to expenses related to the campaign ONLY. Examples include, but not limited to: travel expenses, annual website fees, photography equipment repair, or anything used to contribute to the cosplay site. We also help fund organizations that work with us to help fight against things like verbal harassment, sexual assault, spousal abuse, etc. These funds, however, WILL NOT be used to fund personal expenses such as costumes, items for sale at conventions, autographs/pictures with celebrities, etc. Those types of items are personal purchases and we pay for those ourselves 🙂

Please let us UNITE and STAND AGAINST BULLYING.

We thank you in advance for your support. Please spread this campaign to as many people as you can. This is not about us but about those who will need our help and together we can make a difference.

Who are the most noticeable Filipino cosplayers?

We all know that cosplaying is a hobby and something done for fun and not for any fame or whatsoever.  Recently an article was released about “Top 20 Prettiest Filipina Cosplayers To Watch Out For“.  The list is based on the number of Facebook likes by the cosplayers in the list.  We are not saying that this is an incorrect list since it is a list based on popularity of the fan pages.  However, we want to ask directly from the community as to WHO ARE THE MOST NOTICEABLE COSPLAYERS in their opinion.

We do not believe that there is a best, a top or any hierarchy in cosplay but there will always be those who had been noticeable due to their remarkable cosplay, characterization and more.  This is the main reason why we are throwing this question to the community.

If you want to be part of this survey please visit http://bit.ly/cosplayersurvey2015.  The survey will be from January 26, 2015 – February 8, 2015.  Just 2 weeks so that we can publish the results on February 9 and know what the community thinks.

Cosplaying is for fun, camaraderie, passion and to meet new friends and that is the best part about it.

Thanks for participating in advance with our survey.

Happy Birthday Uzumaki Naruto and Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH)

NCPH tarp - modifiedOctober 10 is the official birthday of Uzumaki Naruto and coincidentally it is also the founding anniversary of Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH).  The organization was established on October 10, 2010 (10-10-10) by Longskie Saldana, David D’Angelo, John Dwight D’Angelo, Matt Anthony Jabonete, Rio Magpayo and Nathan Nocillado.  It started as a mere group of cosplayers wanted to cosplay Naruto characters and later evolved as an organization promoting “Cosplay for a Cause” or #CausePlay.

NCPH had been at the forefront of innovations in the cosplay community since then.  Some of its innovation includes:

  • Balance criteria for judging in cosplay competition giving 25% weight uniformity.
  • Rebranding of Mecha category to Mecha/Armor to give more chances to those who are non-mecha.
  • Introduction of Cosplay for a Cause through “Otaku I Care” and reaching out to various causes.
  • Introduced the first ever pinoy-themed event Pinoy Otaku Festival (though this has yet to be fully implemented.)
  • First ever local cosplay organization to branch out internationally through Naruto Cosplayers International and Naruto Cosplayers US.
  • Pioneered events in areas like SM City Marilao, SM City Valanzuela, SM City Baliwag, SM City Masinag, Waltermart Sta. Maria, and Starmall among others.
  • Introduced Cosplay Idol, the only true cosplay + talent cosplay competition.
  • Pioneered Otaku Choice Awards, the only award giving body in the community which gets nominees and votes from the community itself.

Trials and hardships are part of any organization including Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) but with the help of everyone we will surely manage to triumph over each and everyone of them.  We greatly value the community that we belong that is why we will continue to be of service to fellow cosplayers, anime fans, manga readers, artists, photographers and more.

What is behind Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH)?  What does it do?  What inspired us?  Let us share this article from Otaku House to tell you more about us, just click this link.

Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) no longer affiliated with Cosplay Fashion Run 2014

Naruto Cosplayers PH (NCPH) after thorough consideration have decided to discontinue its affiliation as co-presentor of the upcoming event Cosplay Fashion Run 2014.  The event was originally dated August 23 at Amoranto Stadium but was moved to mid October and the venue will also be changed according to main organizer, Great Events Plus.

The decision came after key event changes were made which made the partnership impossible for the organization to continue.  The organization is also concerned about venue changes particularly moving the event to the UP Sunken Garden with event time going until 10:00pm.

Personally,  I also think that it is hard to have an event at the UP Campus that will last until late in the evening.  Although, I am sure that the event organizers will provide security within the venue, but the thing is what about the security when they go back home.

Although NCPH will no longer be part of the event we still bid the organizers the best of luck for this event and hopes that everything will go out smoothly.  We also thank them for their trust and confidence in having us on board during the first schedule of the event.

Brief Overview of the World Cosplay Summit (WCS)

WCS_2014The World Cosplay Summit (WCS) is tagged as the most prestigious gathering and competition among cosplayers in the world. It is set every year at the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) in Nagoya, Japan. Cosplayers who really wan to showcase their talent both in cosplay performance and craftsmanship are aiming for a shot to be an official representative to this event. Besides that however, little do we know that ordinary people can also attend and enjoy the annual WCS event.

WCS 2014 will be composed of 25 participating nations with 20 competing for the World Cosplay Championship. Observer nations include the Philippines, Hongkong, Vietnam, Taiwan and Portugal. Official countries participating in WCS 2014 are Australia, Brazil, China, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Malaysia, Netherlands, Russia, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States, Hong Kong, Taiwan. Each team can have 2 cosplayers coming to Japan.

The representative for this year for the Philippines is Sora No Katsuo from Davao. They won against 4 other finalists during the WCS Philippine Finals during the 13th Toys and Hobbies Collectible Convention at SM Megatrade Hall.

Official representatives from competing nations will get a chance to compete for the World Cosplay Championship.

“The WCS Championship is a competition that rewards both the ability to make costumes and perform on stage. There are two types of judges: celebrity judges, who mark the stage performances, and international judges, who mark the craftsmanship of the costume.

The celebrity judges each award 10 points for performance, 5 points for Faithfulness to story and characters, and 5 points for the costume impact on stage; 20 points in total. There are usually five celebrity judges, resulting in a total mark of 100 points.

The craftsmanship judges panel awards 100 points. This number is then multiplied by the number of celebrity judges, and then divided by 10 to make the score compatible with the marks of the celebrity judges. If there are five celebrity judges, this brings the total mark for craftsmanship to 50 points.”

WCS_2014

If you want to be an official representative, you have to win in the preliminaries that will be conducted in each country. Preliminaries in the Philippines are being facilitated by the official partner organization, Anime Alliance Philippines. The preliminaries usually starts September and culminates into the finals, usually held at the annual Toys and Collectibles Convention.

As an aspiring WCS representative you have to not only be good in cosplaying your character and having an outstanding performance on stage but also be a good crafter. You have to be the one that created your costume and you must impress the judges on this. Besides that, there will also be a question and answer portion where you have to represent yourself and prove that you are indeed a qualified representative for your country.

If you think that the finalists are the only once that can go to the WCS in Nagoya, Japan then read this. You can also join the World Cosplay Summit as a spectator or cosplayer. There are a number of ways to participate in the event. Find out how, and enjoy the world’s best cosplay festival!
